Who Has Seen the Wind?

Who Has Seen the Wind?

Who has seen the wind?
Neither I nor you.
But when the leaves are trembling, the wind is passing through.
Who has seen the wind?
Neither you nor I.
But when the trees bow down their heads, the wind is passing by.

How does it feel to step out outside on the first real spring day?  You almost can't help but take a deep, healing breath of that clean, lighter air.  And with the inhalation of that sweet scent, you just know the season has changed and warmer weather is on the way.   Have you ever stood on the beach and inhaled the salty, moist clean air of the wind off the water?  Or walked through an old forest and smelled the damp and moss, and noted how gentle and listless the leaves move in the breeze?

Our relationship to the air element is not necessarily in its presence, but in its effects.  We don't think about breathing, or about running out of air.  Air just is.  The only time we think about it is when it is affecting other objects (like blowing leaves around) to make its presence known, or say, in the case of asthma, presenting us with the possibility that we can't get enough. In these ways,  we can see how the air element doesn't exist in isolation, but is always in flux between all the other elements.  Air is in constant movement, back and forth, up and down, and it doesn't even have a steady pattern - it exists in randomness, chaos, and disconnectedness.  It would seem then, that it shouldn't be very effective at all - except that its very nature makes it powerful.  This ability to move about helps the other elements interact with one another, creating the pattern of communication as well.

In our bodies, the pattern of air manifests mainly in the respiratory system, as you would expect. However, the nerves are the communicators in the body and so this is part of the pattern as well.  But the most significant thing about the pattern of air to us is the seemingly come and go symptoms, or the symptoms that seem random, hard to pin down or diagnose, and our ability to communicate and be heard in our relationships.  Does all of that seem to not fit together?  Yes!  Because it is the very nature of air to express that way.

Air's reflection in us can be subtle, like that spring fragrance, or very destructive. Combine air with water and you'll get hurricanes and tornadoes!   If you experience not being able to breathe, or not being able to express your feelings these are powerful reminders that air's expression is not always light and sweet.
As we learn to understand these elemental patterns in our body, our healing and balance become as natural as the winds of change, and sweet as the summer breeze.

Speaking of summer... next newsletter we're going to talk about the pattern of water!  No one can swim without it.!
